Hi all, new to this forum and got a problem already. I've got a relatively new tank (about 6 weeks old) just lost 2 fish this week, one I found dead, the other I've had to send to a watery grave, it had most of its fins clamped close to its body, looked very pale and thin. The fish didn't seem to be able get away from the surface, head was always on it and the rest of the body angling down - Is this a swim bladder problem?

I've tested the nitrite levels and they're between 0 and 0.1 so I can't see thats a problem, but being relatively new don't have a clue.

Much appreciate any help and nice to meet you all B)

Matt

Nitrite is poisonous to fish and was almost certainly the cause of your fishes deaths. Any value about zero is a problem.

Please follow the link in my sig and you can read all about this problem - New Tank Syndrome. The article should help you get a fix on what's going wrong and how to fix it. Good luck!

(Oh, and if you post that you don't know what cycling is, take the warning at the end of the article!)

P.S. Please don't flush fish. If they are dead you could be contaminating native waterways with alien, tropical bugs and if it is alive, you have caused it terrible suffering, since it would die very slowly.

Arggh please don't tell me you flushed it alive!!!!. Yes you should dispose of it in a bin (I wrap in newspaper and dispose of it on a walk with the dog (those bins not mine ;) )

Cheers for the help, wish I'd read the guide earlier! Hopefully setting up another tanks for brackish water fish soon, will follow your advice on that one.

Unfortuanately I did flush it  will get some benzocaine from work if I need to do it in future.. do you think you'll ever forgive me??? :look:

Thanks again.
