So I have owned this Upside Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris) for about 4 or 5 months now. I am now having second thoughts about him. I know he is healthy, but he likes to hide, I am constantly worried about him, and for the past 4 months I have been choking down my anxiety because he is not the biggest fishy in the world and he loves to hide, I don't know if I am going to turn over a rock and him being dead! I do not know what to do, nothing wrong with him, it is me that is the problem!

Synodontis nigriventris is essentially a hardy catfish and an excellent species for beginners. Apart from being the occasional fin nibbler, it's otherwise a superb community fish, being small enough not to threaten neons or guppies, while armoured enough to defend itself adequately when combined with semi-aggressive cichlids and loaches.

It is a gregarious species though, and singletons will sulk; keep at least three specimens. In addition, besides insect larvae and crustaceans, wild fish also feed extensively on algae and decaying plant material. So a diet containing a mixture of bloodworms, chopped seafood, and algae wafers would be ideal.

Cheers, Neale
