Have you ever BUILT a tank? i dont mean add sand/water/plants/fish..I mean built one.. like cut the glass and built the frame? My next project will be BUILDING a tank :D from scratch. (esp when a big tank can cost 500+ bucks)

I havnt built one yet but I will be. Ive done quite a bit of researching on the net and is definatly on my to do list. Plus Im a former carpenter and have a ton of tools just collecting dust now days. I wont be cutting the glass though. Theres a glass company not far from me where I can get the size I need.

I have gotten very active in the DIY side of the fish hobby this year, and have done many small projects, including a 5 gallon acrylic tank.. didn't leak but my cementing was pretty sloppy. I have a lot more practice now and am thinking about trying my hand at something of about say, 30"Lx18"Wx14"H, somewhere around 30 gallons. I'm having trouble finding info on how high I can make a tank with what thickness acrylic, I mean exact info. They say up to 13" high can be made with 1/4" cast acrylic, but what if the tank is 4x8 FOOT by 13" high??? Is 1/4 thick plastic gonna hold back 260 gallons? Anybody know a good link for this?

Thanks!

Hi Harmonic,
A friend built us some of those acrylic tanks. They hold 40gallons each and we have to make sure they don't get filled too high, because they will bow. He has his own Acrylic shop. I will be able to post pics later. But here is a link that you can go to and see what size thickness you will need.

Great link Tom_Linda.

BTW, wouldn't adding a top brace prevent bowing in the acrylic? I haven't ever had an acrylic so forgive me if this is a stupid question. :)

Lots of nice information.. gives me stuff to think on.. i think my first attempt will be a 50-70 gallon tank with a glass front and lexan sides/back and a "white" plastic bottom with all the fixtures in the bottom part to hide tubing and stuff. welded steel frame i think also :)

I know. Never having built my own tank, it's nice having people like Tom_Linda and Knucklehead around to ask questions and get some good advice. :)
