Went to my LFS today, got myself some Julii's, googled them again just now and got the impression theres also a breed known as the false Julii?

Cory's

Sorry about the quality, did my best with a camera phone. What do you guys think? Mislabelled?

*Edit*

Even if you cant guess which I have, any input into the topic of false Julii's would be of great help :) Thanks!

From what I keep hearing... Most people that think they have julii really have trili. The patterns vary so much and they are so similar that it is very hard to know what you really have.
I am personally beginning to wonder if real julii's exist at all. I have yet to see any proof that they are really real. I can't find anyone that has the real thing.
Beautiful fish though... :good:

Thats alright then, ta :) just making sure it wasnt as big a difference as getting a common or bristlenose plec ;)

Jollysue has some ordered. I looked on the site where she ordered hers. There are some pretty good pics on there so you can see the difference. You may have really gotten Julii.
Julii are smaller and the spots don't touch. The pics are on corysrus.com
You can look and see which one yours looks more like. Keep in mind that the patterns vary in each a good bit. :good:

From what both Ian and Bryan said, it is mostly determined by where the cats are from. In order to know for sure you must know where they were caught. That makes it dependant to be able to verify their source. Bryan is confidant that he can do that. C. julii and C. trili are also on planetcatfish.

The only clue would be where the fish were shipped from, Belem and they could be C . julii, Iquitos, Peru and they are almost certainly C. trilineatus.
It is very unlikely that Bryan's or any other's exporter will divulge the location of their catches, that is assuming they actually know. Most collectors are one man enterprises, just scraping a living out of his local area, catching fish and selling them to the export companies. Most of these guys keep their source a close secret.

The full details of both species are also on Corydorasworld and in my book "Identifying Corydoradinae Catfishes", as well as breeding details of both in my "Breeding corydoradinae catfishes". Sorry for the blatant plugs, but that's where the info is.

Ian
