hi all,
i am wondering whether i have been fobbed off.
i am head over heels with the swartzi cory and wanted a small shoal,
i bought 4 and i was put on the "wanted" list at my local shop.
i have waited 6 months and got a call stating they finally have more in.
i bought 4 more and i didnt look at them,i just asked them to bag me up 4 .
when i got them home and settled them in i realised that my new lot look a completely different species!!! completley different markings!!
i went back and asked them about my findings and i was told "thats the trouble,diferent regions of the river have different markings "
i am so disappointed as i love the original ones i have and these new ones dont look like swartzis.
Do they vary in markings and colour?
i would be very interested to hear from anyone

you have been very helpful,YES these are the ones i have in my original lot i think they are stunning,these new ones have tiny dots,a cream band across the face where my others and like in your pics have black.
if i can i will take a pic and post it and see if anyone can identify them for me,there are so many corys which look simular with just a tiny variation of pattern.
i really dont think my new 4 are swartz's.

It's very possible that you were sold a "look alike" fish. It would not be the first time I've heard of this being done.

While it's true that in different places the markings on Corydoras are different, if they are different, then they are not the same fish.

Many of the corys that have been given C numbers are ones that have more recently been discovered or declared different enough from the earlier cataloging to be given recognition as being a different fish.

Please let me know what you find out and what you decide to do about your fish. And just out of curiosity, was it a chain or an independent lfs that sold you these fish?

thank you all for being so helpful WOW lady fish what some sites you showed me there are so many i will have to go through them and study each pic.
the shop i bought them from is a well established family run business only a small shop but everyone (so i thought) knew their stuff not the usual saturday youth who is there for a few bucks at the weekend.
if i could catch them i would but i have so many plants and rocks i would have to clear the tank out to catch them up.i guess i have no one to blame but me! if only i looked at them first i wouldnt have bought them but i trusted them and merely told them to just get me 4 out of the tank,i dont have to worry about quality as their fish are of the top quality so i didnt think i needed to choose what i wanted.
i will get pics and post them at the same time i will go through all the photos on the site lady fish sent me but as i stated earlier some are so so simular i would appreciate the experts on here to also have a look at what i got,i just may miss a spot or a dot in the wrong place and then mis name the species i have

i noticed this other species of a similar name could this be what they sold you? I am not sure why they are named similar

i have tried taking some pics and these new critters are camera shy as soon as i get into position they skuttle off.
i will now got and study the links i have been sent and see if i can make out which ones i have.my original 4 are definately swartzi's going by the photos you guys have already sent me its just now identifying what the others are,with your help we have established they are not swartzi's
