Just wondering, I've read online that the dwarf puffer can puff up when it is threatened. Is this true? I have not yet seen this behavior with my puffer, even while I was transferring him between tanks. Which I guess is a good thing because I don't want to stress him out.

But, just curious, does anyone know of a picture of a dwarf puffer puffing?

So far I have seen one of my Dwarves puff, looked like a big Croakie marble, but kind of translucient, and one of my South Americans puffed up, looked like a Ping Pong ball with black & yellow stripes on top.
I do have pics somewhere of a S/A puffed and one of my T. cutcutia puffed, I'll try to find them and post for you if you like.

Here you go. :D

Puffed up

When I brought home my first GSP he puffed up when I was netting him out of the bag. Scared me half to death cause he made a horrible pooping noise. From that day on any moves my puffers made I used my hands, and never had them puff again.

edit a popping noise lol not pooping :)

That my friend, is why you're never supposed to net a puffer, they can get air trapped inside them and that can cause all sorts of damage.

I have used a net and cup combination, seemed ok as i just used the net to get him in the cup all while underwater then pulled the cup out.

Netting is fine IMO, but as mattbeau mentions, never expose the puffer to the air in the net. I use the same technique with all my puffers, net in water and transfer to a cup under water....worst I've experienced so far is one of my S/A's biting the net and refusing to let go , had to move cup net and puffer into the new tank until he let go...lol

lol...me too, with teeth like that I'd be biting everything, just to see what kind of damage I could do....lol

lol, and their teeth bloody hurt as well...I got bitten for the first time the other day (t'was the first time I wasn' being careful) and it really ddi hurt, and tigled a bit as well... :X
