I was thinking about building a wooden cabinet for my 24" tank, but am unsure as to what wood and other things I would need to make it strong enough.

If anyone has ever built one themselves before, could you please let me know, cause our black metal stand is rancid

I think they are just made of Conti board, as for design take a look at commercial ones and see how they are made because they get their strength from they go together. If you do choose to make your own, go to a large B&Q or Homebase they quite often have a large cutting machine that gets all the bits the right size and square.

But i would look into a standard one, from somewhere like petsmart they are quite cheap and you might not be able to buy the wood for the same price.

I had to reinforce a stand that I had so that I could put my fish tank on it. You just have to make sure that there is enough support for the tank. I have I think two 2X4's that are underneath the sheet of wood itself to reinforce it so it doesn't cave in. So again, the main thing is to make sure it can be supported by reinforcing it with strong wood. It's worked for mine. I had myself and a friend sit on it (400 Pounds) and it didn't make a noise or cave in so I must've done a decent enough job on. Good luck!

 I built a stand and canopy for my 100 gallon tank, made it out of 3/4 plywood on top and 4 4x4 legs with 2x4 infrastructure. i'll post pics tomorrow
