Hello,

About a week ago, I added three Harlequin rasboras to Fafner's side of the tank. Fafner's a betta, for the curious. Well, Fafner ignores them, and spends his day swimming around saying "ain't I just the prettiest Betta?". But this post isn't about him, though he will be mentioned later. :hey:

The harlequins don't appear sick at all, fins erect, eating fine. But every once in a while, especially in the morning, two of them, my largest one and a slimmer one will swim really close together side by side, and kind of nudge against each other. This goes on for about 30-minutes to an hour, and by the time their done, they, but especially the larger one, seem tired. They are fine an hour later and then go about their normal rasbora routine, which consists of swimming around the tank and eating as a happy trio.

Here are my water specs...

pH 7.2 (a little high for rasboras, but that's as low as it will go in liquid rock land, without chemical interference, and I won't go that route, but it's very stable)
amm 0ppm
nitrit 0ppm
nitrate I don't have that test. But I also have live plants.
Temp: It is summer in Illinois! I turned off my aquarium heater in May! The tank stays between 82 and 83, I know really warm, but it's again, very stable. I have a very fancy digital thermometer that measures the degree to two decimal places. It was pricey, only $10, but I wanted to make sure I could monitor the temp well especially when my apartment can approach 90! During the fall, the temperature gradually falls to the 77 I maintain in the winter with the heater.

I do 25% weekly water changes and they're due for one today. The nudging is also punctuated by chasing. Are they fighting, or is  in the air? It's fascinating to watch. If it's breeding, Fafner is intrigued by the free porn in his tank and will just sit and watch them from his cave. A fish with a fetish! :hey: Please feel free to edit if this is too racy for the board.

Any advice?

two of my rasboras do this too. or at least i think it might be the same thign, if not very similar. Two of mine swim in close formation next to each other, like they are dancing together. They do it at the same time every night. I took it as a mating thing but mine don't appear to get tired afterwards. You might be limited on tank space but ideally I would recommend getting at least one more so there is a bigger school as these are schooling fish. Preferably I'd have 6-8 but I think you are too limited for that.
P.S. Bless Fafner and his porn!!!

Alas, tank space is limited, but since now it is a planted tank, maybe I can squeeze in one more on Fafner's side! When I kept them before, I had a school of 12, that was like ten years ago, though. They were great fish. I could always forgo the pygmy corys and just build a rasbora school on each side. Then I could easily get six on each side. Sometimes you can't have everything. -_- But pygmy corys are just sooooo cute! Decisions, decisions...

It makes me wanna give 'em little cigarettes when they're done! If it is breeding behavior, my water specs aren't too bad. It wouldn't be the first time my fish have gotten in the mood for

I went to that nice LFS and stocked up on low light plants, and everybody looks happy scoping out the new decorations. I just love redecorating. Funny, your's do it at night, mine are morning fish. ;) I should post in that wierd habit forum about Fafner's fetish. That would get some laughs. :)

Well it looks like the love dance will be over. Two of the rasboras jumped over to Fassolt's side, leaving the bigger female behind, with Fafner. I knew I filled the tank too high, after I did the water change! Now I gotta take some water out, so Fafner and Fassolt don't get any bright ideas. :X

False alarm, they were easier to net than I thought. The lovers have been reunited!

Man, I have the mellowist bettas in the universe!

I just love fish!! They all have their own characters!!!
I've had rasbora eggs from mine (althougnh I have to say here that my two that frequently 'dance' are both girls - lesbian fish - yay!!!!!)
I do have a male and female that sometimes dance like that though and I think that's where the eggs came from!!

Neat! I'm actually really pleased with the rasboras, for all their strange behavior. My environment is not the greatest. The air conditioner in my apartment is really a power-guzzler, and most of the time I keep it off and run fans to keep cool. So the tank temp is too high for my taste, but I gotta live with it. I'm sure there's probably a solution, but it would probably be way too expensive for my sad college student budget. But the bettas and rasboras seem to love it a lot. The new plants don't seem to mind either, but time will tell. I think the worst of Summer is now over, so the tank will gradually creep down to 77, which the temp I like to keep it at.

I know I have at least one female rasbora, she's bigger and fatter than the others, though I think she released the eggs because she's a bit slimmer now, but the others are more difficult to tell, and the books really don't have a clear-cut image that really shows the difference. I know it has something to do with the black marking, but on living, moving animals, such differences are much harder to spot.

Update, got eggs too and Fafner's really pissed at me right now, 'cause he was munchin' away and I took them away. I think he even scowled :grr:

Found them on a Java fern leaf. I don't know what do with them; keeping them in there and letting Faf munch is my gut instinct, as I don't have the supplies, time, nor money to dedicate to raising fry like I used to. I used to raise kribs, which were much easier, mommy krib and daddy krib did most of it for me, I just fed hatched brine shrimp and fed them.

It was cool, though, and by the way, I added two more rasboras like you recommended. They are already thanking me. My sex ratio still sucks though, I have 3 males, 2 females. Love to get one more female, even things up a bit. But the poor guy took 20 minutes netting the one female, so I wasn't gonna ask him to net another :fun: That would have just been mean! :shifty:

Bless you!
It is fun raising rasbora but can be challenging as they can be picky! If your Betta wasenjoying the extra special high in protein very good for him food then............ :byebye: eggs! Might be better in the long run! I only had success once raising rasbora and not sure I'd do it again!
Glad you got more of them! They will be thanking you! As for the ratio, I wouldn't worry too much...you might get lesbians like me!!! (It's so fab!!)

Actually with my ratio, I'll probably get homosexuals. It is working much better, they are pleased with me. I moved the leaf with the eggs to a more secure position, hopefully Fafner will forget, and I'll see them, but I doubt anything will come of it.

Well maybe not but u can always see!! Maybe Fafner will turn into a surrogate Daddy!!!!
:dunno:
Would love to know how you get on so keep me updated!!

Surrogate daddy, yeah right, Jeffrey Dahmer's more like it. He totally staked out the territory and ate all the eggs. Poor rasboras didn't even get a single egg, even though they produced them. Now, he's like looking at me and asking, "I want more, man, make 'em do it again!" He's sulking now.

Rasboras are doing the  dance again! What is it with these guys?

They are so horny. I may try breeding these guys when I come back to FL.
