I am considering adding some harlequins to my tank. I have white/brown gravel but I have heard that they prefer dark gravel. What are the benefits of the dark gravel and do you think my light gravel would be a big deal? Also, they would be going in my 10 gallon with my 3 cherry barbs (which I am not willing to get rid of) so how many do you recommend I get? It would be nice to watch them shoal.

I would get 4. It will be overstocked by the inch-per-gallon rule, but as long as you keep up on the water changes it should be just fine. The gravel doesn't really matter, but they do like subdued lighting, so if you don't have some already, get a few floating plants (real or silk/plastic) for them.
I just love these fish... very pretty and active.
HTH!
