hello folks,

I'm looking at getting a 4th tank, and this would be a custom 500l tank, measuring 48"x24"x26".

It's got me thinking about what I would need to get in the form of hardware. The key reqirement is that the setup would be as close to silent as possible, as it will replace my main living room tank.

I've got a few questions if that's OK?

1) Filter: I definately want an external filter, and I understand that the filter should turn over 5x the tank volume per hour. This means, I "think" that I won't be able to get an ehiem, as their Prro 2 would only do it 2.5x an hour, and their pro 3 would do it 7x an hour.
Therefore, what other models would people suggest?

2) Water movement: As it's a big tank, would I need to put some powerheads just to move the water, or would you see thiss as not required?

3) As this wouldd be a freshwater tank which I would plant heavily, would this depth of water mean it would be more or less required that I add CO2?

4) As the water is fairly deeep, will it mean that it is easier for the water to be anoxic? If so, how do I ensure good oxygenation?

5) would 2x275 heaters be enough for this tank, or would you go for 2x300w?

6) As far as lighting is concerned, I'm thinkin of 4 tubes. 2xplant lights 1xpower light and 1xbeauty light. Do you think this will provide sufficient Watts for plants at this depth. Would it be more likely that I would need metal halides. Would it bee practical to add a blue atanic. Is this the best setup for lighting?

Many thankss for your help

Hi Steve,
We have a eheim 2128(thermo filter) on our 400 litre tank, alongside an eheim classic 2217. The 2128 is adequate for a tank up to 600 litres and also heats the tank,so no need for heaters inside the tank. The only reason we have extra filtration is because we keep big fish,so the more filtration the better.
I also believe that you can never have too much filtration on any tank......the more the better.
Hope this helps.
