Is there a particular type of freshwater, cheap fish that ABSOLUTELY MUST live in schools? I've heard that tetras and cories both do well in schools. Suggestions?

Almost all tetras, danios, Cories, rasboras, rainbowfish, silver dollars, several livebearers and all barbs. It's really a long list. I forgot loaches and several kinds of catfish.

Endler guppies and Dwarf Cory's, AS previously said, there is a huge list of schooling fish. I am new to fish myself so i wouldn't want to advise any further than that. The two I mentioned are some of my favourites and i've read up on them which is why I mention them. good luck :good:

Endler's aren't really shoaling, IMO.

If there's one fish that must be kept in groups, it would be the glass catfish. They're very shy and rapidly stop eating and pine away if not kept in sufficient numbers.

Gold barbs. I have them and they are so cute :hyper:
You're supposed to have 5+ of them, but 2 of mine died so now I have 3. But they're still happy because they're friends with my platies too.

I would add harlequin and scissortail rasboras, from my experience they stick closer than any tetras I have ever had ;)

Thanks for all the feedback! I've decided to buy 50 or so tetras for my 55 gallon anyone know where to find them relatively cheap? My LFS sells one for a buck is that a good deal?

Thats a great deal! Petsmart near me sells them for more than two bucks each. :/

perhaps its appropriate to point out fish do not live in Schools. they live in shoals.
Schooling is what fish do as a defence action.

Silver Dollars are good shoal fish, but they will need a big(ish) tank.
Clown Loaches too. but, because of their mature size, they need a large tank.
Black spot barbs (filament Barbs) but again they grow large.
personally, i like Rummy-nose Tetras.

more unusual would be Glass catfish.
