Hard Water Levels High?

My mom was wondering how to make the water more softer because our tank water has very hard water in it. We tested our tanks with test strips and I was wondering what hard water does to fish. So my question really is how do you make hard water, softer?

What is your pH, GH and KH?

Assuming your water is indeed very hard, there are many species from African Lakes that will find your water perfect. But before considering that, you should post your water parameters first...

Also what is the size of your tank?

EDIT: Sorry I just looked at your signature. If you indeed only have 5g tanks, obviously Africans are out of the question... Still, you should post your water parameters...

The PH in my is around 7.6, but I don't have testers for the other things. My moms tank is a 10 gal.

7.6 is ok for just about all fishes unless if you are trying to breed difficult species that require very soft water. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it...

i have a 5g tank which has a PH of 8.0, beat that!
