Today is Remembrance Day in the UK, commemorated every year on the anniversary of the signing of the treaty which ended the first world war. A two minute silence is held at 11 am, as hostilities ceased at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Services are held on the nearest Sunday so that's the 13th this year.
The poppy is the symbol of remembrance which is why there are red paper poppies everywhere.
