my new betta keeps to one corner of his tank and then he swims to jump out of the tank but stays stuck in the corner almost with his gills upwards out of the water for about a minute or so.

is this normal or am i being paranoid

surely someone must know :(

i managed to grab a picture of him in the act last night

I wish I could help you but I honestly have no clue.
Is he gasping when he is breathing? Is he eating and pooing?
Does he ever leave his spot to swim around?

no he's not gasping and is eatin like normal, not seen him poop yet but im normally out in the day. he is still more than active in the tank skittish when swimming but he's started to go into the corners even more and do that :(

im hoping that if i have a spare 5 mins a water change will do him good.

thanks for the advice though

yes, do a water change by all means. from your first post it sounds like the betta is scared of his new environment. sometimes they get skitish and will fling themselves around, often right out of the water. i would cover him for a couple of days, keep his tank dark and away from people, pets etc. feed him as normal.
it's perfectly normal though for bettas to sometimes stick their heads out of the water for no reason. i think sometimes they don't realize they are out of water, you know, just zone out for a while. i've never seen a betta suffocate to death like that so don't freak out.
i remember one spawn where a few of the fry as they got about 4 weeks old would leap out of the water and stick to the side of the tank for minutes at a time, i honestly think they were just playing, maybe seeing who could stick out the longest  there was nothing wrong with them otherwise and they all eventually grew out of it ;)

Check him with a flashlight to see if he maybe has velvet. That kinda behavior is simaler to what my fish did with velvet. Check especially around the head and gills. Might explain the behavior, too, since it attacks the gills first.

thanks guy :) he shouldnt be scared of his environment because he has been in there over a week!

ill check for velvet though and let you know what happens

finally got to change his water today and he has a little fin rot starting so i got him some meds and hopefully he will be fine by the weekend.

should i turn up the heat a little to help along the way?

I hope he heals up for you. The biggest thing I've noticed in keeping a Betta healthy is water changes. That bit about the fry jumping out of the water and sticking to the sides.... Bettas are such characters they never cease to amaze me.
