Hang on back filter pumping, but not filling?

Hello! My fiance just got a new filter for her 5gal tank about a week ago.

it's a hang on back style filter, the other day it started trying to "float" and it won't fill up, but it's getting water because it's pumping water out.
anyone know how to fix this?

Hello. Typically, you have to fill the filter reservoir with water. I know that sounds very basic, but the filter won't run without filling that area full of water.

I did fill up that reservoir before I initially plugged it in
