I make caves from coconut shells for my fish tanks.. My sister has hamsters and i wanted to know if i could make these caves to put in their tanks?

I should think it would be fine, as long as no chemicals are used. If the hammies chew them, you don't want sealant or whatever getting in their mouths.

I think they would make cute little shelters. :)

I might be worried about the hair irritating their pouches so that would have to come off. I used on for my gerbils and they loved it.

I recently did one for my Betta's tank. I had a hard time fiding a fresh one in the middle of winter but finally did in a food store for Spanish-speaking people. The first one I did. I used a knife and got all the strings cleared off and cleaned out the meat. I then boiled it a few times to take out the tannins out but managed, in doing so to burn it-blackened it. SO-luckily I'd bought a 2nd for just such a mistake. This time I left the string stuff on as I want some java moss to take root on it. The subject is pinned some place on this site if you do a search. The moral lesson to keep in mind in this project is "Patience is a virtue". :D I'd purchased some online from a bird place as I didn't feel like cleaning the things out and etc etc. However, the shells were finished in some unsafe manner so they are now being used as nut dishes for ppl. So the moral lesson here is "Enjoy that coconut meat. It tastes really great!". :fun:

no the coconut shelter things are very safe. Just make sure you get out allllll the coconut stuff out. But if you have dwarfs hamsters then I wouldn't use them because if the dwarf were to chew it then it could activate diabetes which they are extreamly prone to.
