halogen lighting

I have just been given a 2' cube. with 4" of clay based gravel, peat and fertilized all mixed in. have just set up the tank to be a planted tank with a few fish. I have as lot of big catfish and up to now the only thing I have done with plants is kill them so I'm going to have a go at a low stocked planted tank. the question is, I have just got a 150watt halogen lamp to go above the tank. looks great but will the plants be ok under it. theres quite a lot of floating plants and you get little rays of light seeping through. also, I have just got a small filter with some floss in at the moment just to move the water around what size filter would you recomend.

just an update:

the halogen light does work and the plants have relly took off.
