I was just thinking lately if you could use are if anybody has tried it halogen bulbs they produce a pretty intense light and heat with pretty low watts. i'm just curios right know i have my T-8's on it the corals seem to love it.

As far as i'm aware normal halogens produce the wrong spectrum of light and won't do anything apart from illuminate the tank with a yellow tinted light :dunno:

A friend of mine thought they could get away with a cheap effective "Halide" setup with a load of Halogen unit placed over his newly designed coral propgating tanks (about 30 tanks). I did warn him not to cut corners but he didnt listen ;) :p

The outcome? Lots of dead and dying corals. the hard corals died within a matter of days, the softies hung in there and looks very sick for a week or two. he has since then changed his lighting :*)

At the moment he is using T8s bulbs (not sure what colour or make). Once they upgrade the system (which is very soon) they will be using 150w halides (with the correct ballasts and these will be complimented with actinic tubes
