I have a gorgeous black and green metallic CT coming from Indonesia soon, and am thinking of also getting a nice red HM.

I would put these in a divided tank, but I hear that half moons and HT's run the risk of "blowing out" their fins from over use in a divided situation?

Is this true?

I have two "normal" ( i love em ) bettas, one is close to a HM, prolly 160, the other just a run of the mill rescue and are in a divider for the past 4-5 months. They flare ALOT still, havn't had any issues with them.

Opinions?

My new green/black CT will be getting at least 5 gallons worth of room, so a 10 gallon tank divided in two or a 5 gallon hex.

Also, whats the best lighting for a betta, fluro?

If it is a true halfmoon, yes they blow their fins a lot. It might be a good idea to insert some sort of opaque divider so they can't see each other all the time - maybe just a sheet of plastic from the craft store even.

As far as lighting, it really doesn't matter to the betta except for the fact that with incandescant, it will heat the water. Also, florescent is what you're gonna want if you decide to get live plants - so I always like to have it "just in case".

If you are like me, I'd be anal about putting objects (plants, substrate, etc.) that might tear up the fins - especially on a HalfMoon. Sure, a tear can mend itself in time, but depending on the tear, it might grow back 'differently'.

Well, I'll have to think about it.

I'd love to have the 5 gallon Hex because of the bio-wheel and its spaciousness for my new friend.

Perhaps two, 2.5 gallon hex's would be better...

So many deicisons.

I have owned betas for years, but have recently just discovered how many varities of bettas are, and have the betta bug has bitten me good =)

-- About the HM reply -- yah, I was going to put very smooth rocks only in his tank, maybe something smooth and ceramic for him to lay around, and maybe a java fern. Not sure yet.

The crown tail will also be in a similiar enviroment. He's quite the looker!

Java fern and java moss are excellent choices.

Do java ferns need any special substrate, or do ya just make sure they are well buried and thats that?

I think you can just throw them on top of the substrate and they will root themselves. Just make sure the current isn't strong enough to carry them away. I wouls suggest java moss. Just throw it in there and it grows like heck!

we have a super delta (almost half moon) that shares space with 3 others in a divided tank. we never keep two males next to each other instead putting a female next to them. his fins are fine, sure he flares at the female a bit but at least it keeps him active. the dividers are clear glass by the way.
