I have Hagen AquaClear 50 Power Filter and I've notice when you turn it off water drops from its filter chamber to the very bottom and Bio Max bag becomes dry, which I believe will kill the bacteria in case of power outage.

What do you guys do to prevent water drop from the filter's chamber in case of power outage? Maybe use UPS battery?

Thanks!

The BioMax media has only been out for a few years. Before that the AC filters were shipped with a sponge, and carbon. Most everyone never ran the carbon, doubled up on the sponge & added some floss on top. The sponge did double duty, mechanical filtration as well as bio filtration.

Nitrifying bacteria will colonize on the sponge just as well as on the BioMax. The sponge, being in a lower position, stays wet when the power goes out. I've run them without the BioMax before they came out with it, as well as with it after it came out, and have seen no real difference.

I make sure I keep the water level high in the tank. A few times when my power went out when I was at work, the water drained out of the filter and couldn't prime itself. I came home to a gurgling filter with a hot motor.
