Ive just been having a close up check of my guppy tank, and noticed that alot of my yellow guppys have got really swollen checks, and their checks and gills are red, looking very swallen, what could this be ? ive neva seen this before.

also, i have one poor guppy who looks like she has got an absess of some sort, more like a spot that has popped, and the "puss" has started comming out, like a spike out of her side, whats caused this?

I feel terriable, ive never seen nething like this happen before, nor have i heard abt it on here, PLEASE HELP!

thanks in advance

Caroline

:D hi carolinesugar
to help us help you, can you answer a few questions.
first how big is your tank and what do you have in it.
do you have water test kits, as it sounds like bacterial infection. you will need to test nitrite, nitrate, ph and ammonia. if you dont then your lfs can test this for you. get them to write it all down so you can post back here.
in the meantime do some water changes to keep your fish in clean water. how often and how much do you change and what do you put in the water when you change it.

in the meantime keep your water quality high by changing 30% tonight and again tomorrow.
hopefully someone else can offer more advice. keep us posted.

Sorry, i 4got to add the parameters at the end of the post.

The ammonia is 0 mg/l
PH is 8
hmm, il have to redo the tests for the other 2, as ive forgotten the results.

The tank is a 30" clear seal, which makes it 24" (long) by 12"(wide) by 15"(deep)

I keep 3 female bettas,
1 danio
1 common pleco
1 harlequin
1 banded loach
and a fair few guppies are living in there at the moment while the new tank cycles enough 4 them to move in. (mainly babies)

i usually do abt a 30% water change every 10 days, and do a 10% gravel clean up every 7 days. when adding new water, its always treated with either aqua plus, or tetra tap safe, to remove the clorine.

i also change the filter pads every other month, and test the water parameters once every week, unless theres something wrong, which means testing the water every 2 days to check on how fast its gettin back to normal.

i keep the temperature of the tank to around 25 - 28, on average its 27.5.

im currently running 2 filters in there so that i have a cycled filter for their new home. both of which are fluval internals, being, the number 2 and the number 3.
ive also got a gud supply of air going into the tank thru an AV mini.

I hope this helps.

Just picking up on the filter pad changes Caroline.

When you say you change them does that mean you completely replace them? I have fluval filters (1 fluval 1, 4 x fluval 2+ and 1 fluval 4+) and I only ever just swish them into syphoned out tank water during a water change every month. I haven't replaced any pads yet at all. Was just wondering as it would mean that you lose your good bacteria every month causing a spike in the cycle. Sorry if this isn't what you meant but it just set alarm bells ringing

My blonde/yellow guppies gills tend to show up redder than my other guppies but they are perfectly fine. That oozing spot sounds a bit yucky though

Hope someone else can be more helpful for you on what could be the problem.

Hiya, good news, the girlie whos tummy i thought was leaking, it was a long stripe of poo that she hadnt got rid of yet, that had just got stuck to her. so thank god 4 that!

Ive come to the conclusion that the yellow guppys have just been makin me panic, cus they neva used to cum to the front of the tank as much as they do now, so i think your right, and that they are normal, just i hadnt picked up on it sooner and paniced.

Filter pad changes = when i sed i change them, i actually meant i change the carbon ones every other month, and with the polyester type pads, i was them, and some times change them if they are startin to fall apart or looking really really gruppy. but because ive got a fluval 2 and a fluval 3 both running in this tank at the moment, even if i changed both poly pads in one of the filters, i neva change both filters pads at the same time, so that i dnt get the spike in water parameters.

Phew! glad it was just a bit of poop!

sorry about the confusion with the pads :*) was just checking
