Hi,
my guppy is nipping my neon tetras and on occasions my other guppies. Is this going to cause problems, can a guppy wreck the fins of my other fish?
My neone tetras are ocasionaly chasing each other and nipping at fins too.
I have a 60 liter tank which houses 4 guppies, 7 neon tetras, 1 zebra danio and 2 long finned leopard danios.
It is perfect with regards to Ph,KH,GH,NO2 and NO3 the water flow is moderate and i ran the tank for 4 weeks with tapsafe and bacterlife added to the tank before adding my fish. It has a mix of real and fake plants, the real ones are java fern and densa, nice and thick around the back and thins down the sides, and numerous hiding places in bogwood and lavastone.
Coiuld it be that the fish are all new and are just putting each other in their place?

Owned an aquarium when i was younger which housed similar fish and that had tetras and guppies, i didnt have a problem with them.

any help greatly apreciated and any way to stop the guppy being aggresive would be great.

thanks.

Cook the guppy :)

Or more decor to break the line of sight, either is good ;)

hi i have this with my male guppy he thinks he is king of the tank i have 160litre with guppys neons platy swords mollys he is the oly male guppy he is a pain in the bottom constantly chasing other's around he chases the males more i havent noticed him doing any harm to their fins ect he is just agressive towards other fish,

this may sound crule but i asked my fish store what to do about him and they said put him in a breeding tank to allow the fish to have a fre swim without being pesterd,i did this and it never made a diffrence, she sugested i take him back to store and get difrent male see if it happens again?

soz its not much hope u sort it out soon

just set up another 160 litre for more comunal fish.

Thanks,
he doesn't seem to be doing any harm to the others fins as of yet, if it gets any worse i think i will have to take him back.
All the others seem absolutely fine though.
Thanks for the replies. :good:

what is your ratio of male to female guppys? or are they all male?

you could try removing him from the tank, re-arranging a few items in the tank when he's not looking, then releasing him back into the tank, usually works :good: :hyper:

Hm i have never personally had any problems with my guppys and neons, but as others have asked, what are the genders of your guppys do you know?

I think they are all male, which i was told is best due to fast breeding rates in guppies?
I have been wondering if that is the problem, but the other guppies seem to be fine.
I have heard that water temperature can change their attitude is this correct?
I have also just found some whitespot on my tetras  :shout: so i am having fun at the moment trying to stop that progressing, i have added (waterlife protozin white spot and fungus solution) today and am going to replenish 30% of the water and add more tomorrow.
meanwhile my fish are indulging in chasing each other around the tank!

Male guppys can sometimes become quite nippy when kept in all-male groups, however when a guppy does develop this behaviour it usually doesn't stop until the fish tank stocking is changed (often meaning the offending fish or victim fish have to be removed and re-homed or moved to another tank). Buying more male guppys may help the guppyVSneon tetras situation (although of course it isn't adviseable to buy any fish while you have whitespot in the tank) as the guppys will focus their attention amoungst each other more in a larger group, in the mean time though buying some more plants for the tank may help reduce the stress levels of the neons and help offer them more hiding area's so they have somewhere to retreat to if they want to etc  .
