I have a platy and a guppy in my 10 gallon tank, and the female gup recently passed away. I was watching my fish swim around, when I noticed my male guppy displaying for my female platy. Seconds later, he lunged toward her, and managed to get his gonopodium inside. Ooops on his part!
I thought guppies couldn't crossbreed with platies!? What's going on here! I'm obviously not expecting babies -- or at least not healthy babies, but WHY did this happen? Because the male continues to court for her and display....?

Thanks in advance for any advice! :good:

Oh, ok! Because he even tried to mate with my cory when I moved him to my 20 gallon! lol!

He also tried mating with my male mollies, and succeeded mating with my female swords and guppies.

Hey all, first post.

I currently have proof in my sons 12 gallon tank that Guppies and Platys can produce offspring. We have 2 tiny reddish pink pluppies/gatys hiding under one of our fake plants. At the moment they look like tiny platys...hopefully they live to adulthood so i can take a picture for you all.

Hi and welcome Toolfan to the forums here.

Dont mean to shoot down on your first post but to chat openly on the topic.

Many people believe that cos they see a guppy trying to mate with something dose not mean they will produce viable fry.
Platies, like most livebeares in the shops can store sperm for several months to produce many batches of fry even when there are no males of the same species.

Your little babies will be platies.

Yes, helterskelter is right - your babies will grow up to be beautiful platies, even though the guppies may mate with the platies. I bought a female sword that had babies the next day, but even though my guppies mate with her, it doesn't mean that she will have guppy/sword cross.

And by the way, welcome to the forums! :good:

Interesting thanks for the information. We have had this Platy for about 3 months, but you're right they do look like miniature Platys at this point.
