Hello! My guppy has a weird growth on his top fin. It's bumpy, looks heavy and the fin seems to be clumped together. Anybody knows what this is and what I can do? Otherwise everything else seems normal. Thanks

I have no idea what to do with that issue but, my opinion on guppies has change greatly with my recent experiences.

My journey into the hobby started in the mid-1950's when a friend of my fathers gave me a small tank with a few guppies. They were not fancy by today's standards. In fact, they looked more like the Endlers of today. But, they did prove to be the hardy ones they were professed to be.

When I retired a few years ago, I decided to get back into the hobby and my first purchase was some super fancy, imported, half blacks and reds. I gave them the best conditions I could but they exhibited some of the worst diseases and conditions. Apparently, they have been inbred to the extent they were no longer hardy. I had never experienced females dropping young prematurely and then wasting away. The males lasted a bit longer but also succumbed.

I spent a considerable amount of time and money trying to medicate them but, eventually emptied and sterilized the tanks and moved on to more robust and natural bred fish.

It's a tumour that is showing up more and more on guppies. It usually appears on the tail but can affect other fins. I think it's from bacteria or a virus but there's no cure and the fish end up dying. If the fish has trouble swimming or eating then euthanise it.

Ok thank you. I will google how to euthanize for when I need it.

The two best methods are blunt instruments (not for the squeamish) and clove oil. Google will give you many methods a lot of which are not advisable.

One more question, since it's his top fin and it seemed overgrown from the beginning, can I perform some kind of surgery myself ie scissors to remove the tumor/just cut off part of the fin?? ;) I was thinking at least the bottom part of the fin that is so heavy.

I wouldn't even try that... You'll risk bleeding and fungus.

And if it's caused by bacteria, you risk a bacterial infection as well as bleeding and fungus. Not to mention it's painful to the fish cutting its fins.
