Yesterday morning when I fed my fish all was well. I check them all, in case I missed a birth, every morning.

Last night before turning thier lights off I noticed one of my female guppy's tail was spilt in half all of the wayup the center. She was just resting on the bottom. I put her in a breeders net to watch her overnight. I did not want the other fish to pick on the injured. I got up at 4:00 a.m to check and she had died. :rip:

Now this morning, I have another in the same situation. What would cause their tail to split?

I started medication for ich last night because I noticed itching with 2 of my other guppies. No spots that I can see and I watched them for quite a while.

Sorry about ur fishies :-( Have you tested the water? It's mostly to do with the water quality, so try to do a water change first. I would say it's sort of like a bacterial infection rather than ich.

All of my water tests are fine. I just did a 25 % change and light clean on Monday. I had been treating for ich the last couple of weeks with spots.

Could that have caused the split tails?

I have malafix should I treat with that instead? Or can I use both if there are actually two different conditions?

I've read that hard water can result in tattered fins, especially those of guppies. When my male guppy got fin rot, i added Melafix and sometimes added little salt too. I also turned the temp a bit up and did regular water changes so clean water would also aid his tail. During his recoperation i fed him rich foods to help his immune system, like bloodworms and tubifex worms.
Good luck with the future fish

Thank you for your response. The tail does not seem to be tattered. It split like cut right down the center over night.

I bought a better test kit and restested everything is fine Ph is at 7.0. I almost wish I had found something. Then I would have an answer.

I added salt and turned up the heat to 79.

How often and to what extent should I do a water change?

I do feed blood worms at least 4-5 times a week.

sorry to hear about your problems ....if I have a problem and am not sure what it is I start doing 10% daily w/changes.....sometimes a bit more/less. Like you ...I add a wee bit of salt to help with the healing

so.....IMO - little and often w/changes

good luck

So far all is well today. I lost a one month old fry yesterday. The 2nd one with the split tail that I put in the breeder net is swimming more and is perking up. I think she might just pull through.

I am medicating with ich med, salt & heat. I am doing 10% daily changes as suggested by suemack.
Should I add more salt each change? It would be only a gallon a day. This is the first I dealt with salt so I am still learning.

:*)

If the tail split overnight the cause is most likely due to physical damage because things like finrot are progressive conditions. Sometimes fish tails just split apart, but they regenerate fast. About a week ago one of my goldfish's top fin split and it has been back to normal since two days ago. :)
