hi all, my guppy had 9 fry about 3 weeks ago. i have kept them in a breeding trap since then but just wanted to know how long i should leave them in the trap before letting them go in to the tank with other fish?

When they are big enough not to be eaten. Ideally they would be better in a quarantine tank, but its not always possible. Its not great to keep them in a breeding trap - if its a small one.

It will be a month or 2 before they are big enough to be let out. You can buy net partitions for the tank, which would be a better idea really, that way you dont stunt their development, they get better swimmers and are more likely to hunt out food. My LFS sells the stick in dividers, which are about £8 for a smallish one.

No Worries. Good luck with the little critters.
What seemed to make mine grow faster was a combination of liquifry and tetra fry flake / crumbs. You should be feeding them a small amount about 3-5 times a day really when they are young.

When I first had a community tank, we bought a breeding trap and found that most of the fry died in there. I was very inexperienced back then so I dont know if it was being in the trap or another factor what killed them but I wouldnt use them again. I would just have lots of hiding places, cover and plants for the fry to escape to.

Also works with the theory of survival of the fittest, only the best survive.

I agree with shroob, i have a guppies only tank with lots of plants, and i don't use a breeding trap anymore, i find i am losing fewer now than when i was putting them in the trap.

Very true. They like hiding places. Last time I had some I left them and the strongest survive. But when I wanted them ALL to live, the partition was great.

iv allways found it best to put a small air stone in breeding traps
