i was at my LPS looking for their new fish, and someone had brought in a few adult Guppies. the females were all the same dull silver with blackish tails, chunky girls! but the males were gorgeous things, they made me love them! just like a Betta! so beautiful... so, i was wondering if it would be bad to have an all-male tank (with, say, seven inhabitants) 'cause i know if i can't get all-males and i need females that means i can only get two males and four females, and that means i can't get all the pretties i want and i'll keep gettin fry i don't want or need!

is an all-male tank good, or a no-go?

It seems to be different for individual fish! I have kept an all male tank with no problems (10 in a 10 gallon, with a senile old male betta!), but others haven't been so lucky. Ask the LFS about their policy for returns before you buy! :D

i'm on good terms with my LPS, i work for them every Saturday cleaning the animals up and everything ^^ Francesca actually thought it was a good idea for me to move the baby Degus and the Hedgie into the extra hutches instead of moving the pregnant Guinea pig around, and i'll be fixing up the Ferret's cage with an old t-shirt, litter box and Boo-regected hammie soon. i'm pretty sure if any of the new Boys get Bad they can go back ^^

one of them was gone when i went in today, but there are still two left. a gorgeous Snakeskin-tailed boy, and a rainbow-y neon-swirly guy who just demands i love him ^^

How'd you get them to let you volunteer? I want to work at my lfs, but it hasn't worked out. Maybe volunteering would help my résumé (is that the way to spell it?)... I'm on friendly terms w/ one of the associates at Petsmart, so he could help me out...

Tempestous, i'm volunteering for school actually. Francesca's daughter had done so before, and a bunch of other kids (amazingly, the few i've heard of are all girls ) have volunteered as well. we need 40 hours of 'community service' to graduate, i decided to get it done early. it was quite easy, i just asked Jennifer if i could work there sometimes during the week for school, and she stuck me two hours every Saturday morning ^^

but, my LPS is literally an LPS. it's not a chain at all, not even remotely a chain! it's really an animal feed store, but they started having people bring kittens and puppies and rodents in, and so started buying up some other types of critters and fish. if your LPS isn't just a tiny family-owned operation, it might be hard to volunteer!

PondFreak is right, it depends on the fish, but if the tank at the pets store is all males, or mostly males you might be able to get away with it with higher chances. The people at my pet store suggest that you buy all the males from the same tank (because we have mult. guppy tanks, colors at our store) and they will most likley get along.

I hope I made sense :p :fun:

no no no and no for guppies i am affriad, if you have around about 5 or more all males of guppies then they will fight one another and then the worst will happen and the most common problem for all male guppies is fin rot, basically the stress of being no females in the tank will stress them and fight and shred the tails of the guppies and eventually kill them, females are the easiest cure going plus you can find some lovely cute females just search for them
