This doesn't really qualify as an emergency yet... but my 3 platies are gulping for air at the surface of my tank. Which is weird because it's a 46 gallon with very efficient filtration, and the tank they were in at the pet store was much more crowded. Currently I don't have one of those bubble things; should I get one? Will they be fine until I do? I'm kinda worried cause I thought the filter is enough aeration on it's own... go figure..

If your fishes are gulping for air, then it can only mean that there is something wrong with your water quality. How often do you test, clean, and do water changes?

This is a fairly new tank I am in the middle of cycling... Just tested the water and the ammonia is fine...

Okay. You're cycling with fishes. That explains why your fishe are gulping surface air. Your water quality is still a long way of being perfect. Regular water changes shoud clear up this problem.
