can or has anyone fed their guinea pigs bananas?, i cant find anything on bananas about whether they are good or bad for them

thanks

so far i've fed mine....

carrots
tomatoes
lettuce
celery
apples
cucumber

and they seem to gobble that up pretty quickly, oh and they get a daily handfull of timothy hay it's to teh point now where they start weeting like crazy when they hear a bag

I have fed mine bananas but she didnt like them. guinea pigs cannot produce Vitamin C and they need to be fed stuff like Kale, Oranges, Spinach, and needs to have a Vitamin C supplement also.

Yup - I give mine nanas every once in a great while. They love them.

I feed mine:
parsley, curly or italian
romaine lettuce (on a limited basis)
green peppers (they LOVE them)
Celery leaves
celery, diced
cilantro
carrots (on a limited basis also)
apples
oranges
kiwi
cucumbers
and they always have Cavy Cuisine and as much timothy hay as they can mow thru. :)

oh, FYI - Dont' EVER give them potatoes or rhubarb! It's toxic to them. Just thought I'd mention!

My guinea pig goes through phases where he likes bananas, and then the next week he decides he rather eat something else. (He is very picky!)

But when he was sick and I had to hand feed him with an eyedropper the only thing that he would spit out was the banana mash with vitamin C I made him.

So yes, I do feed him bananas. (And lots of other fruits and vegetables)

There are many foods that provide a much greater nutritional source for guinea pigs than bananas. Bettamomma has provided a great list. If your guinea pigs enjoy eating them then it is fine to offer it occasionally but don't panic if they don't. At least you are doing this. So many people seem to think that a diet of guinea pig mix (you know that cheap stuff your pet shop sells) is sufficient for them. I don't think it helps that they label it "complete guinea pig food"
Anyway you should always offer new foods at least three times if they don't take to it straightaway. Some animals aren't sure at first but given a few attempts might quite like it.

Apples and cucumbers were always favourites for my guinea pigs. They also loved having a good graze when they were out in their run.

I noticed a couple people said they fed their piggies celery- try to be very careful there, because in rare occasions the celery strings have been known to bunch/lodge in the throat and choke. I fed my first boar celery before my vet warned me about it; she nearly gave me a heart attack, lol. Diced, as Bettamomma mentioned, it should be safe as long as it's chopped very finely because the strings won't be long enough to cause problems.

I learned from the vet that I worked for that brocooli is a much better source of vitamin C than even oranges and other things so if you haven't tried that, you might. :)

Hi Chrissy, I'm Suki Wingy from PT.

Dunno bout guinea pigs, but with rabbits you should only give them banannas every so often.
