Someone advise poor Sorrell :/ I have had two spawns in a row that go without a hitch until they hatch, then dad smashes them into the sides of the cup and builds the nest up so they are out of the water and they die against the cup. :grr: Why are they doing this?! Should I just pull the male as soon as I have eggs? I'm getting so frustrated with my overeager Dads :X

Sorrell...
I am so sorry to hear about your spawnings. I wish I had some advice for you, but unfortunately I am still learning the betta breeding "tricks". I understand how frustrated you must feel...I'm having nothing but troubles with my new spawning tank. Well, I hope things get better...I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

maybe you can put something wet on the top of the cup like wet tissue or something.. that way, the fry cant get that high up and they can still be wet so they might survive...... or maybe you can like not use a cup like I did and the bubblenest was nto high at all just like one layer so the fry are always in the water

I'm having nothing but troubles with my new spawning tank.

I'm a little neurotic and I won't use a new spawning tank. I have 2 Jebo 5 gallons and that's all I use.

Sorrell~ I know lots of breeders use bubble wrap instead of a cup. Just cut a 5" x5" piece and place it in the corner, maybe that will solve one problem.

That's a good idea :) Funny how something seems obvious when someone else says it.  I'll have to try that. Any ideas as to why he would do this in the first place? Are they just being overly ambitious? -_-

Looking at Bkk's pictures...indian almond leaf under a cup would probably help too...although that would require me to have some indian almond leaf

Not sure about bkk's experiences, but I've heard that the leaves have a tendency to sink and destroy the nest.

Are they just being overly ambitious?
Probably. I've had that happen once but I can't remember who....maybe my red hm

I personally have had this problem with the leaves, so I don't use them anymore. I know some people use wax paper, and another uses a small plastic lid with great success. So I guess whatever works for you, the bubblewrap seems awefully logical though, as the air in the bubbles will keep it afloat, and there are all the knooks and cranies for the nest to be built...hmm, I just may need to try that :)

I've used a cup, leaves under the cup, and I've taped a leave to the tank and just used it. I have used the bubble wrap twice now, and really like it. They seem to go right to it and start blowing bubbles.

the leaf under the cup was pushed in after the fact. it wasn't placed under cup on purpose but it might have helped cup stay in place. we are hesitant to try something new and infact feel nostalgic towards that cup since it has been the birthplace of every one of our spawns so far ;)

This time six inches, the boy who did it last week was in 3 inches, both 10 gallon tanks.

Depends on the male, but yeah I usually feed both of them up until it starts getting serious in there. When I can tell they are getting close, then no.

I'm pretty much the same way, I kind of play it by ear...I've had pairs in the tank I never fed, and others I did up until, as Sorrell says, things look like they may get serious. There have been times I've put food in and the male didn't eat any, but usually the females do (in fact I believe they always have, when I've fed them in the spawn tank).
