Good day to you all, hope this thread finds you all well.

Those of you that recognise my username will remember the problems i had cycling my tank (30L, plantless) but will also be relieved to know that i now seem to have it stable. Daily water tests have yet to show any trace of Ammonia or NitrIte, so fingers crossed..!

Anyway, bought a few 'common grey shrimp' last week (they're amazing creatures, i really could watch them all day long!) but i was wondering what the difference is between a male and a female..? I have 2 smaller looking shrimp and one larger one. The two smaller ones have beady black eyes yet the large one has a light brown coloured pair of eyes. The black tube that carries the 'waste' out of their bodies is below the 'backbone' of the smaller ones, yet at the bottom of the rear end of the larger one...

Do i have 2 females here? Or do i have 2 males? I would love to see these little fellas breed, as i think with the size of my tank that it would be more suited to shrimp rather than half a dozen fish.

Any replies highly appreciated, Terry.

#EDIT#- Not 'Grey shrimp' at all..they are, in fact, Ghost Shrimp.

When you say grey shrimp do you mean amano shrimp? If so they are easy to sex. the males have an unbroken brown/dark orange line along the bottom of their body and the females have a broken line with spaces in between.

My female shrimps are larger than the males. The females carried the eggs under their bellies for a long time before depositing them(on the filter of all places). I think the eggs need a constant water current going over them though so that made it a challenge to hatch them. The eggs that I put in a breeding tank got a fungus on them unfortunately. Good luck with your shrimp :)
