I saw some green spotted puffers today at walmart. I want one. The lady at walmart said if I have a freshwater tank to add some aquarium salt every so often and I can keep them. I need the low down on the green spotted puffer and if this is true. Thanks

The lady at Walmart doesn't have a clue about what she's talking about. Feel free to tell her that, because what she's doing is misleading customers and putting the health of the animals she's selling at risk. She needs to read a book about puffers, of which there are several, including my own Brackish Water Fishes.

GSPs are territorial brackish to marine water fish that need a large aquarium and excellent water quality. An adult will be about 15 cm/6 inches long when full grown and requires around 200 litres/50 gallons of water. The precise salinity isn't critical, but at least 10% seawater is required; i.e., at least SG 1.003 at 25 C/77 F. Many people keep specimens more than half grown in marine aquaria with live rock and skimmers. They cohabit rather well with damselfish. Needless to say, the salt used to create brackish or marine conditions should be marine aquarium salt mix, not the aquarium (or tonic) salt sold for use when treating whitespot in freshwater tanks.

Cheers, Neale
