I picked myself up a green spotted puffer today for a freshwater 20g iv spent the last month setting up. Iv been told that they prefer a slightly salty environment, but can they handle a completely freshwater one? My new 2 inch guy is soaking right now, want to make sure he'll be ok in the fresh water.

And i know 20g is a little small for a fish that grows to 6 inches, but i plan on upgradeing when i move this summer, i think he'll be fine untill then.

Alright. I just added 2 TBS to the 20g

I tasted the water in the bag he's in from the LFS, and i dont think it has much salt in it at all, he'll probably be fine.

Thanks for the help.

He was moveing around all over the place for awhile, now he's kind of laying in the corner on the substrate. How can i tell if he's not doing well or if i need to change somthing quick, i havn't kept puffers before. He seems very alert though, im just paranoid i hope.

GSP need high end brackish (SG of 1.010 minimum) as adults and are often kept in full marine conditions.

They will be kept in FW in the lfs to prevent the cost and effort of them having to use salt in the water. Just because it managed to survive in the wrong conditions at the lfs does not mean you should continue in the same vein.

Look through the puffer pinned threads and the Brackish section for more info.

20 Gall isnt big enough for a permenant home for 1 GSP. You should be looking at 30 at least :)
