I don't know if this is an emergency as the fish seems normal behavior-wise, however I bought a green spot puffer on Sunday (not for a community) and something isn't right. The store owner picked it out as it seemed the most active and healthy in the tank. We were both bs'ing about other things when he scooped it, so we both missed the fact that it has a near pea-sized lump at the vent/anus. My girlfriend pointed it out as soon as it was in the tank at home. It almost looks like it swallowed a chunk of gravel by the size of it, and the tank it was in at the store was gravel filled rather than sand (but I've never seen a puffer tank in stores with sand). It still swims actively and chases anyone near the tank, and when it was given a few blood worms it went nuts for them. More than likely I'm taking it back to the store tomorrow, however I would like to figure out what exactly the problem is and if it can correct itself. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that whatever it is will pass since it was fed, but I've also considered the possibility of a mass nematode infection. I don't see any camallanus worms hanging out the vent, but I know they are usually only visible upon mass infections.
More than likely I think it is a rock or even a small snail, in which case I'd venture to guess hope isn't too good even if it does pass. Does anyone else have any thoughts, or first hand experience with anything like this?
