I was just wondering about the green severum fish I have got it I was going to buy two of them one male and female but I heard they are very aggressive and they can be tolerant to certain conditions but they are wonderful lovely fish sorry i cant send you a pic because I lost my camera but hes a beutifull fish I tell ya nice rainbow colour he is like a disc shaped fish with very tough lethery skin "not soft skin" tell me if you can check this one out hes a cute little fish with oval eyes and he looks at me in the tank as I look back at him.

They are a freshwater cichlid, not a brackish fish.

They are considered to be one of the most docile cichlids around by most hobbyists (myself included, we own a gorgeous gold one). They require soft, acidic water, plenty of cover and dimmer than average lighting ime. They can get a little pushy with tankmates when breeding (as do all cichlids) but the level of agression is generally somewhat lower than most cichlids, especially if the tank has plenty of hideyholes and places for other fish to escape (caution should still be observed however, as each fish is different). Diet-wise, they require some form of plant material also to remain in top condition (often the ones in the tank  ).

Try looking in new world cichlids for some more in depth info :)

this is a long shot but as you've posted it in brackish, you arent talking about a banded chromide (green chromide) as opposed to a banded cichlid (green severum) are you?

my green severum is not really that aggressive there are whole ranges of these type of fishes aggressions it may be the way they are genetically or the way they are mentally. It all depends on what mood it is in they are not always that aggressive but they can have spasm attacks and jump up forward in the tank.

Hello aquamanA --

As others have said, severums are not brackish water fish. They normally inhabit soft, acidic water similar to that enjoyed by angels and discus. Your description of their behaviour is entirely normal, these fish being considered peaceful most of the time, but aggressive when breeding. They will get on fine (in a large tank) with robust community species -- larger barbs, silver dollars, plecs, kissing gouramis, and so on.

Cheers,

Neale

green severums can be peaceful fish but in there mental stablity they always bully other fish just for there own making of its territory and land where it marks I think these type of fish are little cuties and I like them alot.

mine is a beast
not friendly at all. ive had some that were nice and some that were mean, its a 50/50 with them
hes not a killer like a midas etc. he just chases sometimes and bites. hes been like this since he was a baby

just curious, but am i blind? where does it say they were keeping a severum in brackish water?

he put it in the brackish section. as far as being killers, definitely a no. super aggressive, another no. the more dominant ones will chase the others out of the way if they want to, but nothing worth worrying over. in the year ive had the 2 of mine, ive kept them with neon tetras, each other, among other fish. just check my signature

i had 3 from about 2" they were the first things in my now mature and thriving cichlid tank, they only really bullyed amongst eachover and had a social order to size, the smallest one did die of an eye problem ( popeye ? ) the remaining 2 are about 6" now and are fine, they arent aggressive per say, but if they are going for food, they will batter up even firemouths to get it, they are very intelegent also they follow you about the room like oscars do, all in all a lovely fish gotta be one of my faverites :)
mine are gold severums btw.

My Severum is the "Peace Keeper" of the tank. The only fish that could keep my firemouth in check. He does let the Parrot "beat up" on him, but when he gets tired of that he stops it. Easily one of my favorite fish.

green severum and gold secerums are hardy fish they have very strong scaley skin and are capable of killing other fish and they can chuck spazz attacks in the tank I would say these sort of fish are not menat for the begginner... :D :good:

Severums get to 12" in length, and are considered to be semi-aggressive cichlids. This means that they are not very aggressive or too peaceful. They do chase other fish, they do establish territories. The aggression of these fish depends on the tank size, the sex of the fish, and the fish's attitude.

Severums are great fish for someone with a tank of at least 55g, and they are fairly hardy. They can be kept by beginners, as long as the beginner has done some research.

I have a green severum and a gold severum, both are great fish that tend to own the tank they are in. The only reason that a severum would kill other fish would most likely be because they don't have enough space in the tank for their territory or if the sev is defending eggs.

I strongly agree with dirtydogg's statement above, my adult severum is usually the fish breaking up fights in the tank, but he never started them.
