Saw some of these at the lfs today. They were absolutely tiny, but really colourful and my son fell in love with them.

I have said we can MAYBE get them when we are finally ammonia free (see separate topic in tropical chat) but we'll have to take some other fish back to the lfs to make space.

Is there anything we need to know? Are they the same as other neon tetras? How big do they grow? Are they smaller than normal neons?

Any info greatly appreciated.

Paracheirodon simulans, (green Neon), is similar in many respects to regular Neons. They perhaps stay slightly smaller, but are otherwise comparable in difficulty. They tolerate pollution poorly, and if you have ammonia or notrite problems, they won't last long. Once established, they are in all respects similar to Neons and Cardinals.

I bought some of these last spring. I had read that they are a bit delicate so I got 10, hoping I woudn't lose more than 4, but they are all still alive. They are smaller than regular neons and cardinals, mine are about 1 inch long after 8 months. They prefer soft acid water (mine is slightly acid and medium soft). I feed them on crushed flake and frozen cyclops, as these are very small.
There is more info on them here
