I have this really bright green algea that starting to grow on my glass. No matter how much I scrape It will not come off. It's not overwhelming yet, but it could potentially be a problem. Any ideas what I could try to take it off/out and how to prevent it from growing?

I once heard somebody suggest a razor blade. Have you tried Otos? I've got three in my 10 gallon and they keep it really clean.
But you need to figure out the source of the problem. What size tank? What's in it (list both plants and fish)? If you have plants, what/how much ferts are you using? how much light does the tank get?

I have a 55G Marine tank. I'm pretty sure the Otos wouldn't last more than 10 min in it. I do not use any fertilizer.

I am also starting to get green hard algae on my tank also. I use a regular scubber and some muscle. I don't know what it is caused by. I have below 5 ppm nitrate too. Is it wide spread in your tank?

I've got it too. Its tiny little speckles all over the glass in places. It just doesn't seem to come off either with the sponge or the abrasive side. The astrea snails I purchased seem to be doing a good job at fighting it though.

Iv had small area's of it in the past, a normal hand held scrubber and some elbow grease usually does the job though, be persistant.

I'm fat, lazy and that's what snails are for :p

Sounds like the green coarline algae. My tank gets that too. I use the Kent blade scraper with a stainless steel blade. Gets it right off.

Seeing now that is it coraline algae, why isn't the perfered purple kind growing instead?

Thanx for the replies guys. I will try elbow grease and a scrapper.

:)
