I have green algae growing about 1/2 to a full inch under the sand. I'm not sure what it is, it's really not any where else in the tank... Should I stir up the substrate to clean this, leave it be, or try another method to clean and eliminate it. Thanks!

blue green algae (Cyanobacter bacteria).
Do some daily water changes and gravel cleans and it should clear up pretty quickly. Try increasing the surface turbulence and wate rmovement around the bottom of the tank.
It is usually caused by excess nutrients and low oxygen levels.
