I have quite recently developed a green algae thats quite prolific on the sand medium. Some here may fault sand and prefer gravel, but I find detrius drops through gravel and is harder to remove - anyway, this growth is quite rapid as I only cleaned it 5 days ago. Any ideas?

Blue green algae (Cyanobacter bacteria), which is a photosynthetic bacteria (bacteria that can photosynthesise like a plant). It comes in a range of colours including dark blue, dark green, black, brown, red, purple. It loves red light, nutrients, slow water movement and low oxygen levels.
Reduce the dry food going into the tank.
Do big daily water changes and try to gravel clean out as much as possible.
Increase water movement, especially around the bottom.
Increase aeration/ surface turbulence to increase oxygen levels in the water.
If you have old fluorescent globes, replace them (and the starters). Use globes with a 6500K rating.
If worse comes to worse, find some of this.
