What type of gravel is best for a freshwater community tank? Is sand a bad choice? If so, why?

How much gravel should be used? After doing some research I discovered that the ratio for gravel is 1.5 pounds of gravel for each gallon of tank size (so 15 lbs. for a 10 gallon tank). Hope this hepls others out!

Not sure on how much but I have sand in my 55 gallon in my tank and I think it looks so much better than gravel. It's pretty much personal choice but sand is cheaper if you buy play sand you just have to wash it a lot. lol.. You can get I believe 25lbs of sand for $5 us dollars. which is more than enough to cover a 55gal tank so. Good luck. :)
