they dont look very hard to make but how do they work what do you do?

I would just buy one; they are cheap enough. Unless you buy the python system. Those will be more expensive but believe me, they are worth it. They make water changes so easy it's amazing. If you are looking for a regular gravel vacuum, how they work is kind of hard to explain. Maybe someone else can do a good job. It's just a basic syphon. If you ever took physics in high school you'll know how it works. They aren't hard to use but just hard to explain how they work.

i dont know how big your tank/tanks are but i just got the Top Fin brand mini gravel vacuum at petsmart for $2.49 (i have 3 small under 5 gallons betta tanks so mini size is good for "us") but even the largest vacuum is less than $10 i think. and they have this "self starting" thing where you just pump it up and down and the vacuum part fills with water and the siphon begins, i didnt think it would really work but it does, even in my tiny 1 gallon tank! the only other DIY siphon/vacuum ive made was for my tanks at first, i took a large straw and stuck the airline tubing in the straw and taped it up at the "bendy joint" in the straw, a "tiny tank vacuum" other than that i would say to just buy one.

They suck fish poo, uneaten food, and other junk out of your gravel. In turn, keeps your water cleaner and fish happier.

That's the magic part :p . The gravel vac normally has a bigger end that you put into the water and then smaller tubing coming out of that. The suction is enough to get the gunk out but not the gravel.

the only hard part about makeing a diy gravel vac is if you want it to be the pump action starting kind. there is some kind of valve type thing that opens and closes when you move it in order to create suction...

Dont be soft, a bit of fish water aint gonna kill ya if it doesnt kill a tiny fish! lol

I havent tried my gravel pump yet, it is the most basic suck-it-yourself syphon type. The pipe is long enough that u shouldn't get any water in your mouth, but i'm into fire-breathing so I often fill my mouth with parafin, i'm not fussy!!! lol
