Hi everyone
After being advised about Malawi cichlids, I decided against putting them in my tank as I would only be able to put about 2 or 3 in. I have now decided to have a community tank but with the main inhabitant. Could anyone tell me what gourami are the nicest looking and what other species they get along with? Also, what sort of environment do they like? Eg planted, rocky ect.
I really do want my tank to have the wow factor.
Many thanks in advance, Joey :)

Tank size would very helpful. I would recommend the Pearl Gourami or the Dwarf Gourami.

Sorry guys, tat would be quite a vital piece of info. It's a juwel rio 180 ltr.

180 liters equals roughly 48 gallons. That's a nice size tank for Gouramis! :hyper:

Personally I would put (1) male Pearl Gourami, (2) female Pearl Gouramis, (1) male Dwarf Gourami and (2) female Dwarf Gouramis.

That's only six fish and around 21 inches of fish bio-load. You would still have plenty of room for some Cherry Barbs and Corydoras Catfish! I'd probably add (4) pairs of Cherry Barbs and (6) Corys for cleaning up the uneaten food at the bottom.

The reason I favor the Pearl Gouramis with the Dwarf Gouramis is that they get along well together as they aren't as aggressive as the Three Spots, Blues, Golds, etc. They are also the best looking fish in the world in my humble opinion.

Thanks Ruskall, i have googled these fish and they are really nicely coloured pretty fish.

is this the best way to keep gourami? with one male and two females per species and colour? also, would you not recommend opaline gourami in my community tank? and what envoironment do gouramis like? are tanks planted with live plants okay?

Yes, you can keep an Opaline female in with the Pearls & Dwarf Gouramis but def. not a male. Even the females are very aggressive & quite honestly I love my female Opaline but if I had to replace her I'd get another female Pearl or a Dwarf. Opalines are stressful in a community tank. You'd be better off skipping them and the Golds altogether. Now if you had a really larger tank like maybe 80-90 gallons you could get away with it. It's all about having enough territory & matching the aggression & size of the fish.

Actually the best ratio of males to females is at least 2 females per male, but more females is better. Of course every fish has it's own personality and you may find a docile Opaline or a very mean Pearl but that wouldn't be the norm.

Please post pics when you get them so we can all see your news friends. :good:

hi, just an update on the tank, i have now added the majority of my fish to the tank. i have;

Congo Tetra (3)
Red Eyed Tetra (3)
Opaline Gourami (3) (1 male and 2 female)
Pearl Gourami (3) (1 male and 2 female)
Bristlenose Catfish (1)
Clown loach (1)
Blue Ram (1)

I was wondering how I could boost the colour of my fish, I have currently got a Juwel High-Lite day light at the front of my tank. i have had a look and they do what they call a High-Lite Colour, which apparently boosts the reds and blues in your tank. However i wanted to get someone elses opinion on this, would this be okay to replace my high-Lite day lamp with? and if it is, does anybody know any better ones out there for boosting my fish' colour? the bulb is 895mm. thanks guys.

Oh pics will be on the way soon :)

Lighting sometimes doesnt matter if I were you id return the blue ram and the loach blue ram can be very sensitive and loaches need to be in groups of six or more and thwy will get really big sometimes they dont show as much color because they are stressed so lack of color would happen
