I've done a bit of research on this question, but I'm not altogether certain of the answer, so I thought I'd ask the bright people on this board. I am contemplating (very early stages of contemplation) getting another tank to house some larger fish. My thought is to get a 20 or 29 US Gallon aquarium for some Blue Gourami. From what I understand Gourami prefer planted tanks. I've read that Gourami are rather territorial. Does this restrict me to one or a pair, or two females and one male per tank? Also, are Blue Gourami compatible with Dwarf Gourami?

Thanks for any replies!

Bigger gourami should only stay with bigger gourami. They are territorial but it's usually nothing serious unless it's a smaller gourami then they tend to get picked on more. It's best to keep bigger gourami like kissing, blue, and gold together and dwarfs seperate.

Auratus: Thanks very much for the stunningly fast reply. I read that keeping only blues or only opalines or only pearls decrease the chance of aggression. Is that true? I'd rather have more empty space and therefore room for the fish as opposed to crowding the tank. Are three gourami too many for 29 gal?

Yes, that would be fine. True, that it does lower the aggression but they will still fight between eachother, just not as bad as they would with another species. Blue or gold would be fine. Just don't go with anything too big like kissing gourami.

yeah that sounds right each gouarami needs about 5 gallons each especially blues you will notice if you a fish similiar like golds or opaline he will chase them out but then stop wont got throught another part of the tank were a nother gourami is they all have their own little space to call home i know cause ive a lot of gouaramis see my sig i love my kissing fish there always kssing for the damn piece of rock covered with algea but its nice how they chase eachother by the way what kind of fish are u getting i mean gouaramis getsome pearls they are bu-ti-ful LOL

Thanks so much for the replies Auratus and 55gallondude! At this point I'm only interested in fish that are relatively undemanding and peaceful, so kissing gourami are not on my radar right now. I'll look at either blues or pearls. My next tank might be a ways off, but then again what with how absorbing this hobby can be it may be a lot closer than that... :p
