Was in the pet shop about to buy a tank when I spotted a battered and beaten little betta hiding behind a rock in a tank near by. Couldn't tell if the silver fish (didn't know or look what type they were) that it was in with were picking on it or if the male in the next tank might of hopped over at some point.

Either way it's safe now. Had me chuckling for about an hour, what a funny little character they have!

I don't know a thing about it either so any info other than 'yeah it's a fish' would be great :good: I was told it's a female...........?

Anyway a pic ......

i think she looks like a super delta, but if she has had her fins nipped, she may be some other, like half moon

but i would say female :good:

looks like a female to me =] does it have a white spot before its anal fin?

cute little thing though!

Its colour is known as 'Cambodian' because of her peach body and coloured fins =]

not sure on the tail type as shes been a bit chewed!

Looks like a female. . .the white spot may be less obvious since the fish is a light color.

Thanks folks. I feel so much 'betta' (get it ;)) for rescuing her especially seeing how bad she looks. I've been looking out for one for a while anyway so I'm happy all round at spotting her.

She does appear to have a white spot near the anal fin, is this a guarantee she is a she?

Oh I meant to ask....... what can I do to help with the healing process?

And also you can see on the pic that she's looking a bit sore around the gills but only on that side. Anything to worry about?

The white spot isn't a definite sign. Check for a beard when s/he flares.

Make sure she has super clean water with a quarter dose of aquarium salt to keep icky bacteria away, if you can get ahold of it as well try indian almond leaf or extract :)

Beard? By this do you mean the two fan/fin like bits that appear underneath her just behind the gills?

Yeah, the bit around the face that pokes up when flaring, if it goes all the way around the face (Both sides and underneath) That means boy, if it's just at the sides, girl :)

Hi, nothing to worry about on the gills they are normal, it looks pink because of her light colour causing her gill covers to become transparent showing her gills underneath. Good job on rescuing her, she is lovely, looks like a cambo veiltail but she is rather chewed so wait for her to mature a bit and regrow that finnage :good:

that is a very pretty little crowntail female youve got there. i love her color..very pastel-y.
dont use any medication. just keep her water very clean. her damage isnt all that bad to be honest.
the redness of her gills is nothing to worry about either as mentioned above. it is due to her coloring and probably she was hyperventilating from stress (being beaten up and her recent move to your tank). give her a few days and it should look a little less red.
clean water is the best remedy for fin damage. just keep an eye on the damaged edges for anything white, fuzzy, redness or darkened areas. when her fins begin to regrow, the damaged parts will start to fill-in with clearish bits...that is nothing to worry about and indicates new growth. as time goes on and the fins grow more, they will color in.
cheers for the rescue. shes very pretty little girl!
best of luck.
