We just got a small 5 gal. tank to house a future male betta. This tank is for my teenage daughter who would like to have more than the one fish.

Any suggestions of a couple other fish that would do well in this small tank with a betta?

How about a couple male guppies? A couple cory cats?

Thanks

Well I have never had problems with the "nice" tetras. I mean who doesn't like looking at Neons or Cardinals. A Harelequin is also good.

I would suggest not guppies, as the Betta might confuse the guppy tail with another Betta and attack it.

I was pondering on adding cory's to my betta tank too, but going to see how settled he gets, he;s a bit jumpy at the moment and some corys nipping around might scare him.

What about a couple of platies...?

I like guppies. Do they require aeration?

I can only speak from personal experience, but my male betta got along well (in a filtered tank) with neon tetras and a couple of ottos for algae control.

Cories won't fit in a 5gal, both because they get too big and they want to be in a group.

I've successfully kept a male betta with guppies, but that betta was an unusually lazy and non-aggressive one. It depends a lot on the personality of the betta if he'll go after the guppies or not. As a rule though, it's better to keep bettas with something else.

Maybe a small school of little peaceful tetras would do, like glowlight or black neons?

My betta does well with his African Dwarf Frog. He doesn't seem to like other fish at all. My brother has a small tank that I had in my room for a while housing some little neon tetras and all Eddie (my betta) would do was Flare and flare and flare. And zoom around his tank. Finally when I moved the tank back, he calmed down. Now he's his happy self again.
