Good Canister Filter And Uv Sterilizer For A 55g?

Im looking into buying the Fluval 305 or Rena XP2. The Fluval is only rated at 185 gph and the Rena XP2 is rated at 300. There around the same price so which would you choose and why? Also if any other brands are good let me know however im looking to do a canister not a hang-on.

And as far as UV sterilizers go hows the Aqua Ultraviolet 8W advantage 2000? My friend has it on his 75 and his water is crystal-clear.

I'd recommend the rena xp2 definately. Not only are you getting a higher turnover rate for around the same money but the fluval externals have mixed reviews and have had some problems.

I really like my Rena XP series filters. I have a couple of XP3s for big tanks, an XP2 for a 55 and 3 XP1s for smaller tanks. I have never used a UV sterilizer so I can't be much help there. If you are in the UK, many of you are, there is a filter made by Tetra-tech that gets very good reviews too, and it is probably going to be cheaper than Rena XP. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to try one out yet.

Rena over Fluval any day. With Rena's I don't have to worry about it leaking on me (as Fluvals often do), it will always prime first time (which Fluvals don't) and priming is easyer on a Rena. Oh, and Rena's require less maintenance due to the increased surface area of their media baskets Cap that off with a better flow from the Rena, and you've got a hands-down win IMO

Why do you want a UV steriliser? You should be able to keep fish disease-free without one. Actually, with kept without UV tend to be more disease resistant in the home aquarium setting. UV's are great for retailer or wholesalers tanks, but in a home aquarium, they are usually used to mask a poor keeper's mistakes If you really want to go down the UV route, TMC V2's are good units IMO You'll find in freshwater, that a select few swear by UV, a few like me sit on the fence with it, but the majority swear at UV
