anyone here had luck with plants and goldies? i kknow they like to eat and dig, so i imagine my options are somewhat limited, but I'd love to plant my fancies' tank a bit. they are well fed enough to be a little picky, though and thus far have left the java moss be. anything else distasteful enough to be left alone?

Hi,

We have vallis, eloda densa, crypts and java moss with our goldfish and the only one they really eat is the java moss.

They nibble the eloda densa and sometimes they dig it up and I have to replant it but we have no problem with the vallis or crypts now they have had time to root.

The Java moss is a nightmare, always finding bits floating around and getting stuck in the filter where they keep pulling it of the wood it was tied to.

Hope this helps. :)

In my tank putting plants would be like putting chicken into a pirianah tank. As soon as the plants go in, the next morning there is just the sponges and the metal bit from the bottom of the plant are left and the water is very dirrty(<---haha thats the way christina says it on her CD ) (my sister has it)

In a pond environment, the majority of the plants will be in pots, preventing the fish from uprooting the plants, in a tank enviroment though most people like to have their plants growing in the substrate.

You can either try and opt for some plants firmly rooted in some drink glasses or pots or something, or try and go for a really hardy and vigorous growing plant that thrives in cold temps and will grow enough to withstand the goldfishes curiosity.

Goldfish do need veg in their diets though either way, you can buy frozen cubes of specially prepared veg now days for fish, my golfish love it and they have a really healthy vibrant color to them too :) .

AAAHhhhhha "I'm so ticked off, I'm just after spending about 40mins putting a big post together about my experience with goldfish and plants and then the server went"
