Hi Forum

Hope to be moving my two fancy tails to a 45 gallon tank in the not to distant future. The new tank is not cycled at all but i will be letting it run with filter media and gravel from a cycled tank then will add the fish when ready.

My q's are is it ok to put gold fish with sand as a substrate and bogwood. I ask as i have never seena goldfish tank with sand or bogwood in. prob a stupid question but hope someone will clarify :*)

I can't wee a problem with that. I use another forum aswell as this one and one of the moderators has goldfish in a 5 ft tank with sand substrate and a piece of bogwood.

cheers for the reply, i cant see a problem with it and the sand will make it easier to clean the tank i think but i thought i would ost just incase

I've switched from gravel to silica sand and I am sooooooooo glad that I did, it looks better and is far far easier to vac because all debris and waste stays on top of the sand. It took me ages to wash the sand but it is worth it.

I have heard that it is not a good idea to keep goldfish in a tank with sand substrate because goldfish are scavengers and enjoy rooting around the bottom for food. They will suck up the sand with their mouths and the sand will pass through their gills, which will irritate them.

IMO, river rocks are the best substrate for goldfish as they are too big to get stuck in their mouths.
