Goldfish Problems

Hi i have had some goldfish in the past that suddenly began to swim upside down and get "pulled" to the top of the tank. I dont know how they get this or how to cure it. People said to feed them shelled peas, buit i have tried that many times and it has not worked. But instead, a few of the goldfish have gotten better on their own. How do these goldfish get this? Also, how can i cure it? Finally, how can i prevent it? Thank you soo much for your answers everyone!
