Hi group nice to meet you! Can you help me with a problem at my goldfish ( which is completely white now) ?
For 2 days my goldfish started to have a red swelling around the rectum ( see pictures). Does not appear to be affected, swims and eat as before. At the moment I separated it in a small aquarium and I`ll try not to feed it for one day.
Do you have recommendations on what it could be and how I can cure it?

Also, initially was completely orange but 6 months ago it started to turn slightly white and now it is completely white. Which could be the reason for this color change?

Thank you!

Goldfish start out bronze in colour and change over time. They normally change by 3 months of age but can change any time within the first year. The white colour is nothing to worry about.

---------------------
The red butt could be intestinal worms or a prolapse anus. Short bodied goldfish like fantails are more prone to these problems due to inbreeding and a short body with their guts all squished up inside them.

Make sure the fish gets lots of plant matter in its diet.

What does its poop look like?
If it's white and stringy, then it's probably worms.

Thank you for your prompt answer Colin!

Here are 2 photos in which you can see his poop.

From what you say, it looks more like prolapse anus. Can he recover? Is there anything I can do?

He appears to be an Oranda cross. They are white. The orange was probably his juvenile colors and he is now getting his permanent colors. It is normal for goldfish to change colors. Nothing to worry about. I think he’s beautiful. :).

It appears he is bordering on prolapse. It may be genetics which you can do nothing about. I would feed him a blanched, peeled pea. Then fast him for a few days and see if it corrects itself. If it does, feed him very lightly for now on.

Make sure the fish gets lots of plant matter in its diet and minimise the amount of dry food.

Duckweed is a small floating plant that goldfish love to eat. you can grow it in ponds/ containers outside and bring some in each week for the fish to eat.

Any soft leaf aquarium plant will be eaten too.

You can add marine algae to their diet, and in worst case scenarios, add terrestrial plant matter to its diet. Things like pumpkin, zucchini, cucumber, spinach, etc. Just make sure it is free of chemicals and ground up into small bits so the fish can easily swallow it.

You can add raw/ cooked prawn or fish to its diet to add some protein.
